40 Ton Whale Leaps Onto Sailboat off Cape Town

A couple sailing off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa got the whale watching experience of a life time when a 40 ton whale breached out of the water, landing on their 33 ft sailboat.

Ralph Mothes, 59, and Paloma Werner, 50, watched in shock as the 40 ton whale crashed onto their sailboat. Miss Werner said: “It really was quite incredible but very scary. The whale was about the same size as the boat. We’d spotted it about 100 metres away and thought that was the end of it. Then suddenly it was right up beside us. I assumed it would go underneath the boat but instead it sprang out of the sea. We were very lucky to get through it, as the sheer weight of the thing was huge. There were bits of skin and blubber left behind, and the mast was wrecked. It brought down the rigging too. Thank goodness the hull was made of steel and not fibreglass or we could have been ruined.”

The incident would only have been just a ‘whale of a tale’ if not for a passing boat who captured the whole incident on camera. When these shots first appeared they were accused of being photo shopped but video has since been released showing the entire incident.

Whale watching is very popular this time of the year off the Cape Town Peninsula, as the whales come in to breed between June to November.

Virgin Galactic’s VSS Enterprise First Crewed Test Flight

Space tourism passed a major milestone last week when Virgin’s Galactic VSS Enterprise made it’s first crewed flight on July 15, 2010. The two crew members remained attached to the mother ship White Knight 2 during the duration of the 6 hour test flight while they conducted various in flight testing of the navigation and electronics on board. Virgin is hoping to conduct test flights later this year where Virgin Galactic will separate from the mother ship and glide back down to the earth.

Virgin is still on track to launch it’s first space tourists into space sometime in 2012. The 3 1/2 hour flight starts with SpaceShip 2 attached to WhiteKnight 2, where it is taken up to an altitude of 50,000 ft. Then Spaceships 2 detaches from the mother ship and fires it’s jet engine for 70 seconds, which launches the 2 crew members and 6 passengers at a speed of 2,500 mph into space. Once in space, the space tourists will experience once in a life time views of the earth and be weightless for around six minutes before gliding back down to earth. Please Click Here to view an animation of the launch.

For the privilege of seeing and experiencing what only astronauts have experienced to date, a ticket will cost you $200,000 US. This high price tag hasn’t stopped over 300 people from putting down the minimum $20,000 deposit for being one of the first into space. With other companies getting into the space tourism industry, the cost per ticket is expected to drop dramatically in the next 10 years…..so start saving those pennies.

The World’s Most Dangerous Hike

Are you scared of heights? If you are, you might want to skip this adventure. The Huashan trail in China is probably the world’s most dangerous hike. Mt. Huashan is one of China’s five sacred mountains. The mountain is a holy pilgrimage site for Taoists, the followers of Taoism. The founder Lao Zi (Lao Tze) is said to have once lived there. The mountain actually consists of five different peaks, with varying degree’s of climbing difficulty. The South Peak, is the tallest at 7,087 feet (2160 meters) and also the most dangerous. Nicknamed the ‘ear rubbing trail’, as most sections require you to rub your ear against the rock wall. No one knows just how many people have died attempting this climb due to the Chinese restrictions on information. Please click here for a video on the ‘Plank Walk’ section of the hike.
